KGY Media Group has a legacy of serving our community and supporting the local economy through good times and bad. As a heritage radio broadcasting company, KGY’s legacy is rooted in the founding of the medium. KGY’s founding is traced to St. Martin’s College in Lacey, WA and Father Sebastian Ruth, OSB, who established radio broadcasting in the south Puget Sound region. Father Sebastian Ruth first licensed his station in 1914 under the call “7CM” and two years later received the “7YS” call in 1916. He continued to experiment with radio, and in September of 1921 the first real program was aired, at the time the station was heard in 23 states, Canada, and Hawaii, because of the dearth of stations and electrical interference. Then, on April 4th, 1922 the station officially became licensed with the call “KGY” and continued broadcasting from the small “wireless” shack and later in the more spacious log cabin on the St. Martin’s College campus. In 1932 KGY moved to the Capital Park Building on Capitol Way near the state Capitol Campus in Olympia under the ownership of Archie Taft who also owned KOL in Seattle. 1939 marked the beginning of the era in which KGY blossomed into the vital community service and part of the way of life in Thurston County. In that year Tom Olsen purchased the station and his family continues to own and operate KGY today.
